.
Katie Eary is a menswear designer based in London. She graduated from the Royal College of Art and started her eponymous label in 2009. This street wear based menswear label is full of attitude and a sense of aggression. Inspired by the youth and street culture, her ‘couture led’ style collections are vibrant and radiate transgression through her unconventional use of colour and humour. (Diman 2011, p. 190). Her garments are experimental and conceptual with an aim to creating a visual impact. (Katie Eary 2013)
.
Throughout her last 7 collection including her graduate collection, there is an emphasis on juxtaposition of textures. She explores the use of unconventional combination of materials such as leather with fur and transparent fabrics, or digital printing on neoprene paired with Swarovski crystals. She is also known for her use of unusual imagery with engineered digital print, such as her graduate collection with the human skeletons, and also the barque inspired fish print in her Spring Summer 2013 collection. Her use of colour within the menswear field is also quite unique as she uses bright feminine colours such as gold and pink extensively in a number of her collections.
.
Eary’s innovation within the field of menswear is mainly due to her complex use of texture, digital print and silhouette within her design. It is interesting to note that her graduate menswear collection was chosen by British Vogue to be worn on a shoot with Kate Moss, despite the garments were created for a male body.  She is unique in her ability to embed traditionally feminine imageries and materials such as the opulence of barque imagery, pink and red floral, and Swarovski crystal into a masculine form. As she describes her work, ‘I’m just manipulating… I’m just showing possibilities… just to show anything is possible’ (Cordero 2010). Katie Eary is a precedent to my work as I aim to be experimental with textile fabrications and also bright colours within menswear in a masculine context.
